Joan Basinger, 86, died Jan. 22, 2019, at Lima Memorial Health System.  Joan was born Jan. 3, 1933 in Lima, Ohio to the late Ralph and Francis (Hile) Cheney. On March 6, 1957, she married Clarence Kenneth Basinger who survives.

Joan graduated from Lima Central High School.  She worked as a telephone operator and later a secretary at Lima Telephone Company.  Joan also worked at Wittgor in Columbus Grove.

The next Our Version of Adult Learning (OVAL) is Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center.

Jonah Agner, The Food Store, presents “Healthy Comfort Food.” Participants will get to eat whatever he makes. Cost is $3 for members, $4 for non-members.

And, on Thursday, Jan. 24, also at 10 a.m. Deb Stockford, The Frosting Studio, presents “Frosting a Snowman.” She will demonstrate her technique for decorating a snowman cake and participants get a taste. Cost is $2 for members, $3 for non-members.

Ohio Northern University students and licensed medical staff of ONU’s Healthwise Program will visit the Bluffton Public Library for a free Mobile Health Clinic from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23. from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  

The clinic offers free screenings for:
• blood pressure
• blood sugar and
• cholesterol
   (please fast for 12 hours prior to your arrival to participate in the cholesterol or blood sugar screening).

The Bluffton University men's basketball team fought off Transylvania University for a huge 63-52 Heartland Conference win at the Sommer Center on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Beavers never trailed by more than four during the contest, and they scratched and clawed their way to a well-played victory.

Amy Piero, daughter of James and Lesley Warren of rural Jenera and wife of Daniel Piero of Findlay was named to the Dean's List for the fall
semester at The Berklee College of Music.

Pirates move to 11-3 overall after beating Patrick Henry

Bluffton High School boys' basketball team moved to 11-3 on the year getting past Patrick Henry 61-58 in overtime.

At the end of regulation the game was tied 53-53. Bluffton scoring leaders:
• Soper 19 points
• Denecker 16
• Piercefield 11
• Hohenbrink 10
