Candace Downing, daughter of Craig and Lynn Downing of Columbus Grove, was awarded this year's Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship. She will attend Wright State University school of nursing in the fall.

The Auxiliary established a one-time $500 scholarship for an area student entering into a health/medical field of study.

To be eligible, the applicant must be a senior at an area high school and ranked in the top one-third of the class.

12 schools in ODOT District 1 competed

Cory-Rawson High School won this year's Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 Paint the Plow contest. The announcement was made at the District 1 truck and loader rodeo held in Lima earlier this week.

Paint the Plow is a contest that invites high schools to paint an ODOT plow with a message of school spirit, safety, patriotism or Ohio pride.

There were 12 schools from ODOT District 1’s eight-county region participating this year. Counties are Allen, Hardin, Hancock, Wyandot, Van Wert, Putnam, Paulding and Defiance.

And the schedule for year-end events for seniors

On Monday, Bluffton school board approved the list of 2017 graduates. The list is attached at the bottom of this story.

The last day for seniors is Friday, May 19. Baccalaureate is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, on College Avenue. In the event of rain, it takes place at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Graduation is at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 27, in the BHS gymnasium. Door open at 5:30 p.m.

U.S. Air Force Airman Derek J. Hickey graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Plans to major in civil engineering at ONU

Phillip Tatarkov is the April Bluffton High School student of the month.

Philip is a senior at Bluffton High School and has a 4.0 grade point average. He is on the yearbook committee. He played soccer his sophomore and junior years and also lettered in track.

He was awarded the "Student of the Year" in 2016 for Anatomy and in 2015 he earned a second place for his ceramic project in the Kewpee Art Contest/Sculpture division.

In his spare time he likes to do scratch board art, make glass arrowheads and draw. 

He was Bluffton University's vice president for enrollment management

Bluffton resident, Ron Headings, has accepted an interim position at Westminster College in Salt Lake City.  

He became the Interim Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management on May 1, and will continue in that interim role for up to two years.  Ron and Linda Headings will move to Salt Lake City, but intended to return to Bluffton at the conclusion of the assignment.
