Hancock Sheriff deputies looking for drunk drivers

Aug. 16-Sept. 4 is “Drive sober or get pulled over"

As summer winds down, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is ramping up its enforcement efforts as part of a national crackdown on drunk driving.

Sgt. Matt Kinsinger said, “We are again partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to stop drunk drivers and help save lives.”

The national enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, runs from Aug. 16 through Sept. 4 (Labor Day).

Bluffton, Grove respond to rural fire call

Bluffton, Columbus Grove and Allen County Sheriff's Department responded to a farm fire call at 8530 Columbus Grove Road at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The farm is just west of Ebenezer Mennonite Church.

Bluffton received the 911 call and through mutual aid requested assistance from Columbus Grove's department.

No flames or smoke were evident from Grove Road and it appears that fire personnel focused on a barn on the property.

Four nighttime break-ins reported on July 3

Bluffton police had 477 calls for service in July with 31 reportable offenses and two traffic accidents, according to Tyler Hochstetler, Bluffton police sergeant. The July report follows:

July 2

  • Police arrested Amy J. Muniz, 41, Bluffton, for OVI following a traffic stop in the area of Cherry Street and Railroad Street. The case is pending in Lima Municipal Court.
  • Police responded to a Railroad Street residence in reference to a fight complaint.

Sheriff's Department investigating scam in Beaverdam

Victim accused of tax fraud

FROM THE ALLEN COUNTY SHERIFF - The Allen County Sheriff’s Office has an open investigation regarding a scam that occurred in Beaverdam. 

The victim reported she was contacted by someone using the phone number 202-455-5956 who claimed to be from the Legal Affairs Department and accused her of tax fraud.

The victim reported she told the caller she had not received any paperwork regarding this.  A short time later and while still speaking with the man on the phone there was a knock on her door.

Bluffton PD say to take precautions if you live in the flood plain

Advisory from Bluffton Police: Riley Creek is continuing to rise and may force some road closures soon. If you live in flood prone areas begin taking precautions.

The Riley Creek is continuing to rise and some roads may need to be closed. If you live in flood prone areas you should begin taking necessary precautions. Any rain later in the day may cause substantial rise with the saturated conditions already in place.

Bluffton police file three misdemeanor charges against Dr. Gideon

Pre-trial expected this week in Lima Municipal Court

The Bluffton police department was involved in the recent investigation of Dr. James A. Gideon, M.D., Bluffton rheumatology and internal medicine physician, Ryan Burkholder, police chief, confirmed to the Icon on Monday.

Burkholder said that State Medical Board of Ohio contact the police department shortly after it began the investigation of Dr. Gideon involving sexual misconduct with patients.
