Public Meetings

Except for the price of gas, Village of Bluffton finances appear to be on target so far this year. That's a quick overview of the first quarter of 2011 as reported to Bluffton council by Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

Kindle gave her assessment at Monday's council meeting. She said that revenue and expenses are "where we expected them to be." She continued: "The budget is holding up except for the price of gas." She indicated that if the price continued to increase this summer the village could face some tough decisions.

Bluffton council okayed a 2011street maintenance program on Monday that, when added together in one length, extends for more than one mile.

Depending upon the funds available, the following projects will take place this year:

The Bluffton Exempted Village School District is currently accepting applications from students interested in attending the school district through open enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year.

Students from any school district in Ohio may apply and enroll in Bluffton Schools tuition free. Students are admitted on a full-time basis only.

Applications are approved annually on a first-come, first-served basis and approval is subject to grade level enrollment and educational programs.

The Bluffton school board accepted the resignation of Jim Raabe on March 21. Raabe has been with the school system for 30 years and will retire effective June 2. He has taught accounting at Bluffton High School and served as the high school athletic director.

The inevitable question: "What can the village do about flooding in Bluffton?" was posed to Bluffton council on Monday.

Although it's on everyone's mind, Morgan and Patsy Davies, who have lived on the corner of Cherry and Vance for over 30 years and have experienced lots of high water in their time there, asked council if anything that can be done to fix the problem.

Fred Rodabaugh, Bluffton mayor, answered by stating that nothing is going to happen very quickly.
