One of Bluffton’s rites of passage is entrance to first grade. In many ways it is a complete circle of the community.

There’s clothing to select, supplies to purchase, photos to take, classmates to meet, jitters (for students and parents) and the excitement of something new.

The Icon went to school with two cameras, plus a cell phone, to record the event.
Our photos below show several aspects of the first moments of the first day.

Apollo school board will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29, in the Apollo board room, 3325 Shawnee Road, Lima. The board agenda is an attachment to this story.

The Bluffton school year starts on Monday. It's an important time to remind drivers of pedestrian safety at Main Street and College Avenue.

Ohio law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

"I'll be there with my best sign-spinning moves to encourage drivers to share the road," Paula Scott told the Icon.

Bluffton’s favorite fall event, the Fall Festival, takes place here Saturday, Sept. 24.

This is the 13th annual Fall Festival, and it offers many family-oriented activities throughout the community, according to Daren Lee of Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, who coordinates the festival.

Activities include an antique tractor show, lots of music and food, pony rides, inflatable bounce house, craft show and home expo, farmers’ market, historical exhibits, and horse and wagon rides between Mennonite Memorial Home and downtown.
