Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio Service Group Thanksgiving bake sale

The Service Group of the Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, Bluffton, will hold its annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17. It takes place in the Mennonite Memorial Home lobby, 410 W. Elm St. 

The bake sale will feature a variety of home baked goods including delicious cinnamon rolls, cakes, pies, noodles and breads.  

Bluffton University has named Amanda DeMoine as its head softball coach.

DeMoine has seven years of experience coaching in the NCAA, plus an additional four years of playing experience at Salisbury University, a top DIII program. During spring 2017, she served as an assistant coach at Coppin State University (Baltimore, Md.). Prior to that, she was an assistant coach at Susquehanna University (Selinsgrove, Pa.) for the 2015-16 season and an assistant coach at Stevenson University (Owings Mills, Md.) from 2011-2015. She will join Bluffton’s coaching staff in December.

Williams shared his experience of coming together with a diverse group of individuals within higher education to author chapters in the book “Diversity Matters: Race, Ethnicity and the Future of Christian Higher Education.”

Hiring event to be held Nov. 16 in Lima

Each year, the kind of winter we will experience is an unknown. Being fully prepared for whatever may come is the reason the Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 is looking for snowplow drivers and will hold a hiring event on Thursday, Nov. 16 to find them.

The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at ODOT’s District 1 office, located at 1885 N. McCullough St. in Lima.

That day, interested applicants may apply for a total of 19 temporary positions available in Allen, Defiance, Hancock, Hardin, Paulding, Putnam and Van Wert counties.

Henrietta M. Schumacher, 94, died on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora.  Henrietta was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Putnam County to the late Orlin and Kathryn (Garber) Schumacher. 

Henrietta was a graduate of Pandora High School.  She worked her adult life on the home farm and for many years at Triplett Corporation in Bluffton.  Henrietta was a former member of Grace Mennonite Church and Pandora Missionary Church both in Pandora. 

Dr. Sanjay Khare, professor of physics at the University of Toledo, presented the Forum, “Building a Sustainable Energy Future," on Nov. 7 in Bluffton University’s Yoder Recital Hall. Khare discussed how human civilization will need to adapt to the decline of natural resources such as fossil fuels and uranium in order to have a sustainable energy future.
