Heidelberg strong in 92-68 win over Beavers
The Bluffton University men's basketball team fell behind 12-2 just over two minutes into the game and Heidelberg never looked back in a 92-68 win over the Beavers on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021. The visitors fell to 0-2 on the year, while Heidelberg improved to 3-0.
A Jameel Cosby (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) triple followed by a Mike Ketner (Minster) lay-in pulled Bluffton within five (29-24) after the Beavers trailed by as many as 16 points in the opening stanza. Senior Chad Frey (Lima/Bath) and sophomore Damian Davis (Bexley) dialed long distance late in the first half as Bluffton trailed 39-30 at the break.
Six straight counters by sophomore Trey Clemons (Mainville, Ohio/Little Miami) to start half two made it a three-point game at the 18:24 mark. Another Clemons deuce followed by a Cosby jumper had Bluffton within striking distance (45-40) with 16:01 to play. It was still a 10-point game (63-53) when Clemons got to the rack at the 8:54 mark, but Heidelberg closed on a 29-15 jag that added up to a convincing 92-68 victory on Wednesday night.
Frey was spot on with a career-high 18 points thanks to 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Clemons hit 6-of-9 for 12 points and he added a pair of blocks. Cosby chipped in with 15 points, a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
Bluffton turned it over 16 times, compared to just eight miscues for Heidelberg. The Beavers were 26-of-66 (39.4 percent) from the field, including 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from distance. The Beavers pulled down three more rebounds (40-37), but Heidelberg made a living at the line, going 20-for-27 (74.1 percent).
The Beavers welcome Miami-Hamilton to the Sommer Center for the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m.
