H.W. Enderle served in the U.S. Army
Horace William Louis "H.W." Enderle, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 in Findlay, Ohio.
H.W. was born October 3, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, to Horace William Louis Sr. and Mary Magdalen (Ahr) Enderle. In 1951, he married Betty Sauter, who has been his companion, partner and friend for more than 70 years.
H.W. graduated from Texas A&M in the class of 1950. After graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, serving in Korea from 1951-1952.
In 1951, H.W. and Betty welcomed their first son and would go on to raise five wonderful men.
H.W. deeply valued education, and in 1962, he received a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University. And after a 20 year career with Marathon Oil Company, H.W. retired but never stopped learning. As both students and instructors in Bluffton University's Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) program, H.W. and Betty shared their good humor and enthusiasm with classmates who would later become dear friends.
A lover of math, geography, and astronomy, H.W. used his "down time" to travel the world, explore different cultures, and learn new skills, including woodcarving and welding. His "junk art" creatures became a source of much joy in his and Betty's garden.
In 1978, H.W. discovered his softer side as "Papa." Proudly raising a blue or pink flag with every new grandchild born into his family.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Enderle; sons, Doug (Terrye) Enderle, Jack (Deb) Enderle, Chris (Becky) Enderle, and Phil (Laura) Enderle; daughter-in-law, Cathy Enderle; grandchildren, Rachael Nichols, Amber Enderle, Katie (Todd) Marxsen, Laura Enderle, Anna Enderle, Jaclyn (Patrick) McCue, William (Lisa) Enderle, Matt (Jessica) Enderle, Marissa (Munsell) Randall, Claire (Nick) Mosko, Megan Enderle, Madison Enderle, and Charlie Enderle; brothers, Fr. Gilbert Enderle and Alan (Sally) Enderle; brother-in-law, Eric Hockstein; sisters-in-law Jean Enderle and Denise Enderle; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wayne Alan Enderle; grandsons, Jonathan Scott Enderle and Christopher Jason Enderle; brothers, Ray Enderle and Louis Enderle; and sister, Mary Enderle Hockstein.
H.W. approached everything in his life with precise attention to detail, whether it was painting the football field of Cory Rawson High School or regaling his family with a story (which--if truth be told--didn't always require meticulous detail). It is those details that we remember, carry on and sorely miss.
Visitation will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 18 at Colden-Crates Funeral Home, 205 W Sandusky St, Findlay, with his funeral service to follow. A burial with full military honors will follow at Western Reserve Cemetery in Seville, Ohio on September 19 at 10:45 a.m.
Those wishing to honor H.W's memory may donate in his name to a charity of your choosing, or Bridge Hospice Care Center. Online condolences may be shared with his family at www.coldrencrates.com/
