Pirate girls swimming 4th, boys 5th at Celina Sprints

Bluffton hosts Ottawa-Glandorf and Wapakoneta on December 11

CELINA––The Bluffton High School boys and girls swim teams competed well at the 17-school Celina Sprints Invitational meet on Saturday, December 6. (Swim team roster and coaches listed below.)

The Pirates girls ended up a strong fourth, while the boys finished a very solid fifth at the tough event. 

Ottawa-Glandorf captured the girls team title with 166 points, well ahead of second-place Coldwater (102). Jay County (Ind.) finished third with 81 points, just five ahead of the Pirate girls (76).

Jay County (Ind.) won the boys team crown narrowly over St. Marys, 113-111.5. Ottawa-Glandorf came in second with 102 points, followed by Coldwater (79.5) and Bluffton (65).

Pirate Jenna Downey touched second in both the 50 freestyle (25.68) and 50 butterfly (27.95).

Downey finished third in the 50 backstroke (30.77), and she came in fifth in the 50 breaststroke (34.98) to finish in the top five of all four strokes.

Pirate Jackson Bowlus finished second in the 50 back (26.39), third in the 50 free (23.16) and fifth in the 50 fly (25.66).

Bluffton dove into its season with a triangular meet at the Ottawa YMCA this past Thursday evening. Ottawa-Glandorf and Toledo Whitmer also competed, with no team scores available.

Aaron Ungashick won two races to pace the Bluffton boys. He captured the 500 free in 5:51.28, and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.92.

Bowlus took first in the 100 backstroke at 1:00.85. Camden Verb won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:04.09.

The Pirate boys won the 400 free relay in 3:55.17.

Pirate Kari Diller won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:17.45. Diller also came in first in the 100 backstroke in 68.09.

Downey touched first in the 50 free in a time of 26.02.
