University softball team makes a pitch against cancer

Taylor Haggy (right), a former Bluffton University softball pitcher from South Charleston, Ohio, throws out the first pitch before Bluffton’s doubleheader against Anderson University on “Strike Out Cancer” day, April 8.

Joined by current Bluffton pitcher Kayla Owens (left), Haggy performed the ceremonial duty in honor of her mother, Kellee, a cancer victim who passed away last August. When Haggy was playing for Bluffton two years ago, Kellee threw out the first pitch on “Strike Out Cancer” day, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Free community meal April 30 in Pandora

The Pandora United Methodist Church will be hosting a free community meal on Wednesday, April 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, 108 E. Washington St., Pandora.

The meal this month is provided by Wednesday Witnesses Small Group. The menu will be scalloped potatoes, ham, green beans, applesauce, roll, dessert and beverage.

Schrag wins peace oratory contest

Bluffton University junior Mary Schrag, from Moundridge, Kan., won the university’s annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest on April 9.

In addition to earning a $175 cash prize, Schrag qualified for a binational contest with top finishers from other North American Mennonite colleges.

Miss America draws "circles of unity" in Bluffton speech

Nina Davuluri, the reigning Miss America and the first of Indian-American descent, brought her message of multiculturalism to Bluffton University April 9 as keynote speaker for the university’s annual civic engagement day.

After being crowned Miss America 2014 last September, Davuluri launched “#Circles of Unity,” a social media campaign that seeks to spread multiculturalism and promote diversity. She particularly hopes to become a role model for children and to encourage them to embrace diversity.

Tyler Domer senior recital April 13 at First United Methodist

Tyler Domer will present his senior recital on piano and organ at Bluffton First United Methodist Church, 116 Church Street, at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, April 13.

Domor will graduate from Capital University this spring with a degree in Keyboard Pedagogy. He will travel to Ireland in May with the Capital University Chapel Choir. 

Admission to the recital is free. Donations to help cover Domer's costs associated with the Ireland trip would be appreciated; baskets will be available at the recital for those wishing to donate.

Second Big Mac, Quarter Pounder 15 cents on April 15

Bluffton's McDonald's Restaurant will offer a special promotion on Tuesday, April 15.

Customers who buy one Big Mac or Quarter Pounder with Cheese can get the second for just 15 cents.

“Tax Relief Day has become a promotion that our guests look forward to every year,” said Jerry Lewis, McDonald’s owner. “Our tax day event is one more way we are bringing our guests great value.”

The promotion runs the entire day and is available at McDonald’s in Bluffton, Beaverdam, Ada, Lima, Delphos and Van Wert.
