Local students named to dean's list at Bluffton University

Over a dozen local students were named to the dean’s list for fall term at Bluffton University. Half of those were named to the dean's list with distinction.

Students with a GPA of 3.6 or higher are eligible for the dean’s list.

They are:

University to host senior exhibit and reception

Senior artists and graphic designers from Bluffton University will showcase their most prominent work in a combined exhibit.

Mary Bias, Lima, Ohio; Hannah Brown, Findlay, Ohio; and Lilian Mt Castle, Phillipsburg, Ohio; will have work on display. The exhibit opens March 9 and runs through April 3 in the Grace Albrecht Gallery of Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center.

The artists will be available to discuss their work during a reception 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 15, in the Sauder Visual Arts Center.

Hardin County job fair and hiring expo in Kenton March 3

OhioMeansJobs Hardin County and Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance will hold a Hardin County Job Fair and Hiring Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, at Hardin County Fairgrounds, Community Building, 14134 County Road 140, Kenton.

The morning session is limited to Hardin County students only. 

Over 40 employers, agencies and education providers will be on site and hiring full-time, part-time and seasonal positions. 

Job seekers should bring resumes and dress for on-the-spot interviews. Door prizes will also be given away at the event.

University Alumni Association seeking award nominations

The Bluffton University Alumni Association is seeking Alumni Award nominations for the 2020-21 academic year. The two awards to be given out are the Lifetime Service Award and the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

The Lifetime Service Award recognizes an individual who has dedicated his or her life to heartfelt service to people, community or church. Inspired by personal faith in God and the ultimate purposes of His kingdom, this individual has made a difference in the lives of others.

20th century technology

Bluffton Public Library's retired card catalog quietly stands at attention in the library's history room. In our technical world there are times when browsing through a card catalog to look up a book is just as satisfying as scrolling a computer screen. 

Larry Smucker was a 1959 Bluffton High School graduate

He held a master's degree from Harvard

Former Bluffton resident Larry Franklin Smucker died Feb. 24, 2020. He was born on May 3, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, to Carl and Irene (Yoder) Smucker and died  of Alzheimers in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  

Larry attended public schools in Bluffton, and was a Boy Scout, attaining the highest award of Eagle Scout. While in high school he wrote as a news correspondent for the Lima Citizen and the Findlay Republican-Courier.
