Bluffton University hosts Mennonite education conference Oct. 16-18

Bluffton University will welcome leaders, teachers and scholars to campus Oct. 16-18 for a conference on “Mennonite Education: Past, Present and Future.”

Legion distributes money to 12 organizations

Bluffton Legion Post 382 passed out donations to 12 local organizations on Aug. 17 from the money that was made from its 6th annual golf outing.

Ruth Bartles was a graduate of Beaverdam High School

Ruth O. Bartles, 88, of Columbus Grove died 12:40 p.m., Aug. 22, 2015, at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.  Ruth was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Rockport to Charles and Anna Ross Van Meter. On May 5, 1947 she married Leland Bartles and he preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1990. 

Ruth retired from Konalrad Products, Pandora.  She was a member of Rockport United Methodist Church, Bluffton Senior Citizens and the Cairo Widows Group. She was a volunteer at Our Daily Bread, Lima. Ruth graduated from Beaverdam High School.

175th celebration Aug. 30

A celebration of the 175th anniversary of the founding of the first Mennonite Church in the Bluffton-Pandora area will take place in a daylong event on Sunday, Aug. 30. Bluffton Swiss Community Historical Society is the event sponsor. The celebration takes place at the site of the original log church, near 17876 Road 4, Pandora. The celebration will include a worship service, lectures, displays, hymns, and a traditional Swiss meal held under a large tent. Here is a plaque that commemorates the location.

Blaze of Lights planning committee hard at work - this year's event is Nov. 28

Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus sent in their RSVP, so now the work begins.

It’s August but the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce Blaze of Lights Committee work is underway.

This year’s Blaze of Lights is Saturday, Nov. 28.

Storytime at Farmers' Market; Cars and Coffee; last swim - this weekend

One week to go and school begins.

In the meantime, several events of interest take place this weekend in Bluffton.

Storytime at the Farmers’ Market
Bluffton Public Library moves its Saturday morning Storytime to the Bluffton Farmers’ Market.

Esther Birkey, youth services coordinator, will read books to youngsters from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Farmers’ market vendors are invited to read a book or two, also.

The Farmers’ Market is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Citizens National Bank parking lot.
