School starts on Monday - watch for kids crossing the street - especially at Main and College

The Bluffton school year starts on Monday. It's an important time to remind drivers of pedestrian safety at Main Street and College Avenue.

Ohio law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

"I'll be there with my best sign-spinning moves to encourage drivers to share the road," Paula Scott told the Icon.

Initial gallery show of 2016-17 features two women artists

“Structural Evidence,” an exhibition of work from Valerie Escobedo and Laura Barnhardt-Corle, will kick off the 2016-17 schedule in Bluffton University’s Grace Albrecht Gallery, located in the Sauder Visual Arts Center. 

Opening Aug. 29, the exhibit is free and open to the public through Sept. 22. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A reception for the artists will be held from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Multi-vehicle accident near Mt. Cory closes north and south I-75

Bluffton rescue crews are on the scene of a traffic-stopping accident on Interstate 75. Bluffton sirens were heard around 1:30 p.m. (Friday, Aug. 26)

Both northbound and southbound I-75 was at a standstil at 2:15 p.m. Southbound was also backup up several miles north of Mt. Cory. Northbound was backed up to Beaverdam.

It appears that two semi trucks and at least one car are involved, however more vehicles could also be part of the accident. One semi is off the interstate in a field. Another is off the interstate.

Watch the sky on Saturday - it's a Venus and Jupiter show

The Ohio Northern University Observatory, Ada, will host the first public event of the season from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.

A highlight will be the opportunity to view a conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, in which they pass as close as 4/60th of a degree from one another. The event is free and open to the public.

The observatory is located on the western part of campus near Wander Field.

Bluffton population spurt

New students moved into Bluffton University campus on Friday, exploding the population of Bluffton. The first day of classes is Monday. Assisting move-ins at Hirschey Hall were members of the women's soccer team.
