Girls' soccer: BHS lose to always tough O-G in season opener

Bluffton High School girls' soccer season launched with a home meet on Aug. 25 against Ottawa-Glandorf and the visitors left with a 5-0 win.

Varsity game temperatures had cooled only slightly and the weather was still very sticky for soccer. 

A handball in the box gave Ottawa-Glandorf a penalty kick, and they were able to get it past goalie Jadyn Barhorst.  One more goal made it 0-2 at the half. Barhorst returned for the second half, and stopped several more attempts by OG, but the final score was 0-5.

Edna "Peggy" LePine 1923 - 2016

Edna M. "Peggy" LePine, 93, died, Aug. 25, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.  Peggy was born July 22, 1923, in Tupper Lake, New York, to Vernon and Mildred Proper who preceded her in death.

Peggy drove cars at the Toledo Auto Auction prior to retiring.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam LePine of Beaverdam; a nephew and his family, Larry Jones of Syracuse, New York; and a friend, Ralph Beemer of Beaverdam.

Peggy was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Payrot.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Final "art in the park" Aug. 30 at the library

Bluffton Public Library offers "Art in the Park" (ing lot) at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, according to Jessica Hermiller, library administrator.

All you need is to wear old clothing and join the other interested artists for some creative fun as the group experiments with art.

Meet your elementary teacher on Friday!

Elementary students with their parents or caregivers have an opportunity to meet their new teacher on Friday, Aug. 26.

The meet-the-teacher open house is from 2 to 3 p.m. in the elementary classrooms.

Beaverdam Veterans Memorial brick paver deadline Sept. 1

The Beaverdam Veterans Memorial is nearly all in place, according to Gary Crawfish.

"As a reminder, the deadline for ordering a brick paver is Thursday, Sept. 1," he said.

 "We must have the order by then to ensure the engraved brick paver will be in place for our memorial dedication, 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12," he added.

An order form is an attachment at the bottom of this story.

Ada gets ready for 31st Harvest and Herb Festival, craft booths still available

Booth space and parade entries are being accepted for this year’s Ada Area Chamber of Commerce’s 31st annual Harvest and Herb Festival, according to David Dellifield, festival director.

This year’s festival is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, in downtown Ada.

The festival is open to the public with no admission charge. Proceeds are used to promote Ada chamber activities during the year.

As in past years, it will fill Ada’s Main Street from Highland to College. Main Street will be closed at State Route 235 all the way to State Route 81.
