Don Schweingruber touched the lives of countless students at Bluffton University

Donald Lee Schweingruber, 75, of Bluffton, died Saturday, Sept. 12. Don had been living with multiple myeloma for the past 15 years and was in hospice care when he died.

Don was born April 4, 1940, in Ellwood City, Pa., to Russell and Dorothy Schweingruber and grew up on a farm in Butler County. He graduated from Zelienople High School in 1958 and Thiel College in 1963. He continued his education at Miami University, where he met Nancy Hoeltje. They married in 1965.

Aelker named HCAC Player of Week

BLUFFTON, Ohio - Bluffton University senior defensive end Ryan Aelker (New Bavaria/Holgate) led the Beavers to their first ever win over Baldwin Wallace and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week on defense for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 13. It was also Bluffton's first game on the new turf at Alumni Field.

Pirates win third in a row, this time on the road

If you wanted to draw up a great start to a football game, Bluffton met all expectations Friday night.  Just five minutes into the game, BHS led 14-0 in their first trip to the beautiful Redskin Stadium in Shelby County.  The great start didn’t last however and by halftime, Fort Loramie had clawed back to tie the game at 14-14.  The Pirates showed some grit in the second half and won the game 23-14 to advance to 3-0 for the first time since 2011.

Three staff advancement approvals on Sept. 14 school board agenda

Bluffton school board will consider several contracts, assignments and advancements at its Sept. 14 board meeting.

On the agenda includes certificate advancement for three teachers:
• Rebecca Boblitt
• Jaime Combs
• Kyle Cutnaw

Supplemental contracts will be offered to 12 persons involving winter sport coaching positions. The sports include:
• Girls’ varsity basketball
• Boy’s varsity basketball
• Boys’ freshman basketball
• Middle school volleyball
• Varsity wrestling
• Middle school wrestling
