Modern "Helen" on university stage this weekend

Nov. 1 to 4 in Ramseyer Auditorium

Bluffton University’s fall play “Helen” will be staged Nov. 1-4.

In this scene from “Helen,” Bluffton University’s fall play, Servant (Heather McConnaughey) tells Helen (Brista Drake) stories of the world beyond the room she has been stuck in for 17 years, ignorant of the progress of the Trojan War being fought in her name.

In the play, written by Ellen McLaughlin, the most beautiful woman in the world isn’t with Paris in Troy or with her husband Menelaus in Sparta. Instead, she has been whisked away by the gods to a three-star Egyptian hotel. This modern adaption of the play by Euripides examines our obsession with celebrity, beauty and the myths that eclipse our realities.

Performances of “Helen” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1-3 and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 in Bluffton University’s Ramseyer Auditorium.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for Bluffton University faculty and staff and non-Bluffton University students. Bluffton University students are able to see the play for free. Tickets are available online at tickets.bluffton.edu or at the Marbeck Center information desk. For assistance with tickets, call the box office at 419-358-3239.
