A little inside Icon information

A letter to Icon fans:

Since we launched our Icon website in late September we've been very encouraged by the positive comments from viewers.

The interesting part is that the Icon is a very part-time job for us. We are grateful to the many viewers who send us material and story ideas. Without you we couldn't continue.

We are also encouraged as we find new viewers who recently discover us and pass our link on to others.

Some of you may be wondering what you can do to help us out. Here's a suggestion:

Lak may be Greek to some, but not to John Sylak

BHS GRAD FINDS HIS HOME IN LINGUISTICS AT BERKELEY

John Sylak, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of only a few people interested in Lak, which is a language spoken by over 150,000 people living over 6,000 miles away.

A 2003 Bluffton High School graduate, Sylak graduated from The University of Chicago with a degree in linguistics and is currently working toward a master's and eventually a doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley.

Next community meal Dec. 3 at Sr. Center

The next Community Meal sponsored by the Bluffton Area Ministerial Association is at 6 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Senior Citizen Center.

First Mennonite Church will prepare and serve the meal, which includes beef and vegetable stew (vegetarian option also), cornbread and honey, fresh fruit and lemonade, tea/coffee.

The meal is open to the public. Donations are accepted and go to the Bluffton Community Assistance Program's food pantry.

Post office, Bluffton Icon, Senior Center on Santa's payroll

The Bluffton Post Office, The Bluffton Icon and the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center have signed on the with fat guy in the red suit this month. Youngsters of any age many write letters to Santa. A special mail box for the letters is located in the lobby of the Bluffton Post Office. The Icon will publish the letters. If a name and return address is printed on the letter, the elves at the Senior Citizens Center will send a reply to the writer. Letters will appear in the "Young Citizens" folder on The Icon.

EGG LADY

Okay, this one shouldn't be too difficult. Name a rural egg producer between Bluffton, Columbus Grove and Pandora. If you guessed "Moser" you are on the right track on this plate.

Raymond Spangler 1917-2009

Raymond Spangler

Raymond Francis Spangler, 92, of Bluffton, died Nov. 27, 2009 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla.

He was born Nov. 5, 1917, to Glen and Anna McKelvogue Spangler in Des Moines, Iowa. On Nov. 22, 1953, he married Marcene Ransbottom and she survives.

He had worked at the Triplett Corp., Bluffton. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bluffton, was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50-year member of the Bluffton Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Dayton, and the Bluffton Senior Citizens. He was a graduate of Bluffton High School and Bliss College, Columbus.
