American Heritage Girls organizing in Bluffton

American Heritage Girls, a non-profit scouting group, is organizing in Bluffton.

AHG is dedicated to "the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country." Girls and their families are invited to become involved. 

Meetings will be on alternating Thursdays from 4-6 p.m., with additional service opportunities. Registration and payment is due by the end of September, and each girl is responsible for purchase of uniform and handbook.

Agency on Aging holds "balance" classes at Senior Center; Betty Steiner honored at Sept. 3 dinner meeting

It’s a matter of balance. The Bluffton Senior Citizens Center, 132 N. Main St., will hold classes on balance led by the Area Agency on Aging.

According to Tonya Meyer, director, classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 9, and take place from 1 to 3 p.m. The classes continue for eight weeks.

Registration is required and may be taken care of by calling the center at 419-358-8971. The course is free but space is limited.

Support for Shannon Cemetery project moving along

The Shannon Cemetery Project has quietly built up some steam this summer, Dick Boehr told The Icon this week.

"We are starting to receive some significant donations to assist in our overall renovation plan," he said.

Boehr, local promoter of several community projects, has taken on Bluffton’s pioneer cemetery on Jefferson Street and wants to turn into a source of community pride. Joining Boehr.

“This continuing conversation from cemetery to park-cemetery is a combination of the Bluffton council and interested community people working together,” Boehr said.

New first-year students and transfer students return to campus Friday

About 250 new first-year and transfer students will lead an annual migration to Bluffton University this weekend.

New student move-in, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, will open a weekend on which other undergraduates will come back to Bluffton for the start of classes Monday, Aug. 25.

Bluffton chamber announces ambitious fall schedule; invites individuals to become members

Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce has ambitious plans as it launches its 2014-15 year. In addition to annoucing these plans, the chamber extends an invitation to individuals to become a chamber member for $50 per year. Here is an overview of projects in the works this fall.

Here's all the info you need for Bluffton Elementary this school year

Everything you need to know is here - if you are a parent, student or caregiver to a Bluffton elementary student. The following information is from the August elementary newsletter.

MEET THE TEACHER:  We will hold our “Meet the Teacher” on Friday, August 22nd, from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. in the elementary school. 

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:  The school supply list is posted on the school website.  Kindergarten student supplies will be furnished in their classrooms.
