Beavers down Manchester in HCAC tourney opener

ANDERSON, Ind. - A big six-run second inning sparked the Bluffton University softball team to a 6-1 opening round victory over Manchester University at the HCAC Tournament in Anderson, Ind. Bluffton senior hurler Chloe Shell (Covington) threw six shutout innings in the victory. The Beavers improved to 26-14, while the Spartans dropped to 16-16.

54 volunteers donate 9,285 hours to Bluffton Hospital in 2014

The Bluffton Hospital Auxiliary held their annual volunteer recognition banquet May 1 at The Centre of Bluffton. More than 50 volunteers were recognized for their hours of service to the hospital.

The following volunteers received recognition for giving more than 1,000 hours:

Reita Foulkes was a 1950 graduate of Beaverdam High School

Reita M. (Beemer) Foulkes, 82, of Columbus Grove, died at 2:30 a.m., Friday, May 1, 2015, at Lima Memorial Hospital. 

She was born Oct. 11, 1932 in Columbus Grove to the late Charles and Gladys (Moyer) Beemer. On April 19, 1953, she married Elvet W. Foulkes, who survives.

Nelsy Jane Herbert 1926-2015

Nelsy Herbert died April 29, 2015. She was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Clarksburg, W.V. She was the only child of Delbert and Virginia Hovey, both deceased. She graduated from Clarksburg High School and attended Moore University of Art in Philadelphia,  until she met and married Vernon D. Herbert, Jr.

They married on May 25, 1946, after Vernon completed a tour with the Army. Nelsy was a homemaker and mother.

These Bluffton High School students have been named Northwest Conference scholar-athletes for the winter sports season. Scholar athletes are letter winners in a sport who have earned the following GPA during the season of their sport:

Gold level -- GPA of 3.50 to 4.00
Silver level -- GPA of 3.00 to 3/49
