Movie review: Avatar is one not to miss

Movie review of
"Avatar" 3D
By Hannah Chappell-Dick

Before I saw Avatar, I must say that I was a 3D skeptic. The half red, half blue glasses of the past made me dizzy, and though it was cool when virtual objects were flying towards you at high speeds, it just wasn't worth the headache that inevitably ensued afterwards.

Knit away the winter blues at the library

Interested in learning how to knit or improving your skills? The Bluffton Public library is offering a free six-week knitting program hosted by Carol Edwards. The first session meets on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Shannon Room. The class will continue for six consecutive Saturdays.

Classes will be structured to accommodate a range of skill levels, from beginners to those with intermediate skills. Practice needles and yarn will be provided during class. Persons may bring their own needles, but them must be U.S. size 8.

Paula Scott's coffee solution

Paula Scott offers this coffee formula in response to the column on "I can't make a good cup of coffee."

Paula's great coffee for one average-size mug:

Grind some whole beans yourself on or near the day you will make the coffee. The darker and shinier the beans look, the better they probably are. (However, I don't make "Char-bucks" style coffee and usually avoid French and Italian roasted beans.)

Get one of those cone contraptions that sit on top of your mug. Put in a paper cone filter and two heaping scoops of ground coffee.

A return to routine

From http://steinermp.wordpress.com/

It's time. Time for life to return to routine. Which, by the way, I love. I thrive on routine. Vacations are nice for awhile, but sooner or later, my brain begs for routine. I want to go to bed at 9:30 p.m. and get up at 5:30 a.m. I want to hit the road running by 6 a.m. I want to get to work by 8:15 a.m. Okay, that was a lie. 8:30 a.m.

Psst! want the real scoop on Ohio's new laws?

You've read or overheard in conversations with the guy ahead of you in the grocery line about several new laws in Ohio. These range from having your lights on when your car's window wipers are at low or full speed. Then there's the wide range of insurance laws.

What's a good Ohioian to do? So many rumors. Which laws are real? Which are bogus?

And worse, what are the potential penalties? The Icon to the rescue! Want the straight scoop? It's easy. Click here for the new laws.

What bad coffee and great rolls do to the mind

By Fred Steiner

It's all Greg Ring's fault.

His wife, Mary, prepared the most divine breakfast rolls of 2010 for our family. Greg dropped off this artistic work on his way to church. Ah, now for a good cup of coffee. The day - heck, the week - will be complete with this combination: hot rolls and coffee. The problem is, I can't make a decent cup of coffee. Can't put my finger on the reason. But my coffee rests in the C- grade range. I know this because no one will drink it. Not even my daughters.
