My son wrote this last year for English class at Trinity Lutheran School in Jenera. I thought it was very appropriate for the 9/11 anniversary. I think people should read it and realize our heroes are not football or basketball stars. They are ordinary people like you and me. It brings a smile to my face every time I read it so I thought it should be shared with the Bluffton community.
Our best guess is that this is either opening day of The Charles Co. in Bluffton, or on a stretch, one of Bluffton's Dollar Day sales. Leland Gerber took the photo.
The Charles Co., 108-110 S. Main St., was located where Citizens National Bank lobby stand today. Above it at one time was The Iron Lantern Restaurant.
Millager's Pharmacy eventually replaced The Charles Company when it closed.
Viewers with other observations of this photo are welcome to comment. Our guess on a year is early to mid-1950s.

Thirty Bluffton students, along with Heather Koontz, assistant professor of social work, were among the more than 900 people who attended a Sept. 8 community summit on bath salts and opiates at the Lima Civic Center.
The students worked as volunteers at the event, where they helped park cars, greet people at the door and collect cards for attendees' continuing education units, among other services.
