March 7 program at library is first step

Gardeners of the Bluffton Pandora Area will hold a program on seed starting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, in the lower level of the Bluffton Public Library.

That program is open to the public.

Several additional club items are in the current newsletter attached at the bottom of this story.

SHANNON Service Club at the Center; Senior Citizens Center downtown

It's a Bluffton garage sale weekend thanks to the SHANNON Service Club and the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center. Here's the details:

S.H.A.N.N.O.N. Service Club - at The Centre, 601 N. Main St.
• Friday, Feb. 24 - community craft and garage sale, 4:30 to 8 p.m.
• Saturday, Feb. 25, community craft and garage sale, 9 a.m. to noon
  25/75 raffle drawing, 11:30 a.m.
Admission to the sale is $1 with children 12 and under free.

Janice L. Umphress, 89, died on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, at 2:57 a.m. at Memorial Hospital of Union County in Marysville, Ohio.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1928, in Lima, Ohio, to Lee and Rhoda (Hammer) Wingate who preceded her in death. On June 28, 1946, Janice married Maurice "Morrie" Umphress and he died on Aug. 7, 2010.

Janice was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ada and the Women's Guild of the church. Janice was a 1945 graduate of Bluffton High School. She was a member of the Ada Senior Citizens.

"Love Your Library," video screened; and new library logo revealed during Love Your Library Month

There's a new video in town and it features local actors - who really aren't acting. They are simply being themselves.

Called "Love Your Library," the five-minute video offers an assortment of opinions from library patrons in a fun way. After all, it is "Love Your Library Month."

HCAC Coaches Poll

BLUFFTON, Ohio - With the winter sports coming to a close the 2017 baseball season is only days away. The Bluffton University Baseball Team is preparing for its spring break trip to Florida, taking advantage of an unseasonably warm month of February.

7th grade boy Pirates bring home a NWC trophy

Bluffton Pirate boys' basketball fans have lots to look forward to as the Bluffton Junior High 7th grade team won the Northwest Conference tourney at Convoy on Saturday.

Coached by Dan Garlock, the team was 13-5 overall. In the tournament, Bluffton first defeated Lincolnview then Columbus Grove in the semi-finals.

In the nail-biting title game the Pirates came out on time in overtime defeating Spencerville 35-34. Bluffton also tied for the east side regular season NWC title.

The Bluffton High School Chamber Ensemble received an "Excellent" (II) rating at the OMEA State Orchestra Adjudicated Event held at Bowling Green Middle School on Feb. 17-18.

On Friday, the BHS ensemble performed "Korean Melody" arranged by Albert Wang, "Dove's Vagary" by Shirl Jae Atwell and "Concertino in G" by Elliot Del Borgo. The orchestra is under the direction of Rachael E. Lewis and Debra Herr.
