Winter sport and academics

Several Bluffton High School athletes are Northwest Conference scholar athletes, according to Jim Raabe, NWC  commissioneer.

To be named a scholar-athlete a student must be a letter winner in a sport. The gold level is for students with grade point averages of 3.5 to 4.0 during the season. A silver level is for students with grade point averages of 3.00 to 3.49 during the season.

BLUFFTON, Ohio - Gabe Makin (Elida) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week following his pole vault victory in Virginia over the weekend.

Makin won the pole vault at the Washington and Lee Carnival on Saturday. The freshman cleared 4.70 meters which currently ranks second in NCAA Division III. Makin opened his outdoor campaign much like he finished the indoor portion of the season when he bested the competition (15-7) with a Heartland Conference championship at Anderson on February 18!

BLUFFTON, Ohio - Senior Josie McElroy (Mt. Orab/Western Brown) has been named the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week after leading Bluffton to victories at Albion and over Heidelberg the last two days. It marks the third time in McElroy's career that she has been named the HCAC Hitter of the Week.

Bluffton Family Recreation is ready for spring - are you?

A wide selection of class offerings for youth and adults take place during April and May, according to Daniel Tinch, BFR executive director.

A 4-page printer-friendly spring newsletter listing all the offerings is attached at the bottom of this story.

There are several new and several expanded classes. For youth a May 5 kid's out takes place on the same evening at the Bluffton Athletic Boosters reverse raffle.

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University baseball team took to the field to face off against the Goshen College Maple Leafs in a set of games on Sunday, March 18. After a 4-2 victory in the first game, Bluffton dropped a 9-5 decision in game two. The split puts Bluffton at 9-5, while Goshen moved to 9-12 on the season.

"The Bluffton We Never Knew," a photo history book of Bluffton from 1861 to 1911, is the subject of an Our Version of Adult Learning (OVAL) held at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center on Monday, March 19.

According to Tonya Meyer, director of the center, the program starts at 9:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public.

Several photos from the book will be shows and described. In addition copies of the book will be available for sale at $19.95 plus tax.

The book was released this winter by the Bluffton Icon.
