Jack Fields was an outstanding Bluffton HS athlete

Jack M. Fields, 84, died Dec. 23, 2020, at the Ohio State University-Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. Jack was born Sept. 19, 1936, in Bluffton to the late Robert and Gertrude (Free) Fields. On Aug. 16, 1957, he married Carol Moser Fields who survives.
Jack graduated from Bluffton High School where he was the all-time leading scorer for 44 years with 916 points and will be remembered as an outstanding rebounder.
He played varsity basketball for three years and was a member of the 1955-56 Non-County Championship basketball team. After graduation, he played on Harry Klay's town team in the semi-professional basketball league.
Jack also played football and upon graduation he was the fifth leading scorer with 150 points. He worked at Ex-Cello in Bluffton as a machine specialist for 37 years, the last five years he spent in Detroit, Michigan, at their new plant.
Jack was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Bluffton. He enjoyed bow hunting for deer and on a hunting trip to North Dakota for pheasants, they wrote that Jack demonstrated a good eye for bringing down ring necks.
Jack and his wife, Carol, spent the last 22 years at Orange Harbor in Fort Myers, Florida. He loved to fish and has the record for the largest tarpon caught at 76 inches at Orange Harbor. Jack was a former director of the Bluffton Sportsmen's Club, and was a member of the Bluffton Fire Department during the Palm Sunday tornado.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Fields of Bluffton; three children, Bruce A. Fields, Bob (Barbara) Fields and Susie (Jeff) Campbell all of Bluffton; four grandchildren, Ashley (Jon) Lucas, Cody (Robin) Fields, Scott Campbell, Rachel Campbell; four great-grandchildren, Amya Campbell, Cali Smith, Tavon Smith, Jordan Lucas and a sister-in-law, Mary Fields of Findlay.
Jack was preceded in death by a brother, Richard "Dick” Fields.
Private services will be held at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bluffton.
