The Ashland University senior placed fourth in the men's 60-meter hurdles on Sunday, crossing the finish line with a new personal-best time of 7.678 seconds – which also makes Bassitt the second-best Division II indoor men's 60 hurdler of all-time.
Minnesota State's Myles Hunter has the top three men's 60 hurdle times in D-II history – 7.53, 7.64 and 7.67 seconds.
On Jan. 31 in the ATL, Bassitt won the men's 60 hurdles in 7.71.
He wasn't done on Sunday, however. In the men's 400 dash finals, Bassitt won his section at 45.27 seconds, and overall, finished second by just 0.03 seconds to Michael Cherry.
That time is Bassitt's PR, besting his 46.33 seconds last year at Grand Valley State – and also is the best D-II indoor men's 400 indoor time in history, surpassing Saint Augustine's Josh Scott in 2010 and NYIT's Howard Burnett in 1990.
"It's a wild feeling," Bassitt said. "If you told me when I got to AU that I would be the D-II record holder at 400 meters, I would've laughed at you. Not to mention being No. 2 in D-II history in the 60 hurdles.
To race Omar McLeod, a guy I've looked up to for a while and other Olympians was an amazing honor. To be able to rise to the occasion and run a PR in that situation was such a blessing.
"It's all faith, man - faith in God, faith in my coaches, faith in my teammates, and faith in myself. To be able to take down Myles (Pringle's school) record is amazing. He was a guy who showed me how to work, and he set the bar, so I'm honored that I was able to be the one to raise it."
Bassitt is off to a blazing start to his 2020-21 NCAA Division II indoor season, leading the nation in both the 60 hurdles (7.70 seconds) and 200 dash (20.85 seconds), and ranking second in the country in the 60 dash (6.73 seconds).
His top 60 hurdles time in collegiate competition would be tied for second in NCAA Division I.
Bassitt's senior-season accolades include U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II National Men's Athlete of the Week on Dec. 8, and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 20 and Feb. 2.
Bassitt has won a pair of NCAA Division II national championships at Ashland, and is a nine-time D-II All-American.
The American Track League is a made-for-television, four-meet indoor elite track and field series which is broadcast live on ESPN/ESPN2, and features the top men's and women's athletes in the world.
All meets will be in one place, at the University of Arkansas, in order to create a strict and comprehensive COVID-19 protocol for all involved. The 2021 ATL season began on Jan. 24, and will conclude on Feb. 21.
