Over winter break we had the chance to catch up with Nicholas Slinger. He graduated from Bluffton High School in 2013 and has shared some great insights from the perspective of a college upperclassman.
 
Where do you attend school and what are you studying there?
Ashland University studying Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Political Science. 
 
What led you to choose this major?

After eight years as director of the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce, Fred Steiner is stepping down and that position is now open, according to Phil Zimmerly, Bluffton chamber board president.
 
Steiner said that while he enjoys his involvement with the chamber, the Bluffton and Ada Icons, two online websites he owns, continued to grow and take more of his time.
 
The Bluffton chamber launched several new programs in the past eight years. It spearheaded a new Christmas downtown garland project now used by 45 businesses.

These three women will receive Volunteer of the Year Award this year from the Bluffton Senior Citizens Association according to Tonya Meyer, director.

Typically the association’s directors chose one person, but not year. According to Meyer, director, the three women chosen are all quilters and do many other craft and sewing projects for the center.

A major tragedy last week struck a family in the Bluffton school district and a community response is underway to assist them.

The Shawn Justus family of Beaverdam lost their house and all belonging is a house fire on Dec. 18. The residence was on Lincoln Highway between Beaverdam and Cairo.

Beaverdam-Richland Township Fire Department responded to the blaze and called Bluffton and Cairo departments for backup.

The fire was not the only tragedy for the family this year.

Bluffton Class of 1965 held its 50th class reunion Oct. 2 and 3. A tailgate party was held at the Bluffton town hall during the homecoming parade on Oct.  2. On Saturday class members toured the Slaw Cutter. Saturday evening was the reunion with 54 present from the class of 98.

Santa Claus came to town on Saturday. He held court at The Dough Hook.
