Bluffton’s wrestling team went 1-4 as a team in the Findlay Duals to open the 2017-18 season. The Pirates defeated Bath 36-29 in a team win. BHS dropped matches to Sandusky, Findlay, Oak Hills and Fremont Ross, all schools in large school OHSAA divisions.
Deandre Nassar (220) got his season off to a strong start with a 5-0 day. The junior won one match by pin and had two close wins by 3-2 and 4-2 scores.
FROM BLUFFTONPIRATES.COM - For three quarters the Bluffton Boys Basketball team had tough sledding on offense, getting decent looks but shots would not fall. In the fourth, BHS started converting and came back for a thrilling 41-37 victory over Leipsic to open the 2017-18 season. Kaleb Jefferson led Bluffton with 16 points.
Bluffton’s boys basketball team opens the 2017-18 campaign Friday evening with a home contest against Leipsic. The Pirates will look to continue their momentum after making the District Tournament the past two seasons. BHS finished with a 13-12 record last year including a 4-4 mark in NWC play.
Bluffton High School senior Tristan Smucker was named second team All-Ohio in voting compiled recently by the Ohio Soccer Scholastic Coaches Association.
Smucker was a team leader on Bluffton’s boys soccer team that made back to back trips to the OHSAA regional tournament.
It was a popular and frequent event in Bluffton in the 1920s and early 1930s. The photo with this story shows the starting 11 on Bluffton’s 1929 team, which was one of the all-time great squads, as you will see by the game scores. BHS was only scored on three times.
This team also had the unfortunate distinction of losing only one game – to the Pandora Flying Dutchmen. Bluffton finished the season at 8-1.
