10 university students spend spring break in week of service

While some students decided to go to the beach over spring break or home to relax, 10 Bluffton University students decided “Why Knot?” spend the 2017 break week in service.

Several members of SERVE, a service organization at Bluffton, traveled to Quakertown, Pa., where one of their projects was knotting quilts during West Swamp Mennonite Church’s Why Knot Week.

You know the lyrics to "Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes." A new generation learns these fun action words during "Babies Love Books," held at the Bluffton Public Library. Esther Birkey, youth services coordinator, leads the group. View more photos of the class below.

Both lifelong Bluffton residents served in World War II

70 years.

The Bluffton American Legion Post 382 recently recognized two lifelong Bluffton men.

The two, Dale Huber and James Oberly, both World War II veterans, received special recognition representing 70 years of appreciation and membership from the legion, according to Dennis Morrison.

During the war, Huber, who turned 90 in December, served with a bomb removal unit in Germany. He is a retired farmer and retired owner of Specialty Foods of Ohio.

Jackie Wyse-Rhodes, assistant professor of religion, will present the Colloquium “Portrayals of the Natural World in Second Temple Jewish Literature” on March 31.

Her presentation is free and open to the public beginning at 4 p.m. in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

“For biblical writers, the natural world was a source of inspiration,” says Wyse-Rhodes, “such as when the Psalms invite the reader to join the sun, stars, mountains, oceans and rocks in praise of God the Creator.”
