What to do on a Friday night? Gemenid meteor show still strong tonight Dec. 14 -15
Although it peaked on Thursday night, you will still have many opportunites to see several shooting stars tonight, Friday, Dec. 14, into Saturday.
The Geminid meteor shower is one of the best star shows of the year. Icon veiwers can really take advantage of this tonight.
Many of us here in the northern hemisphere are likely more familiar with the annual Perseid meteor shower. That takes place in the summer, when it is a lot easier to leave the house and find a nice open field or dark area to sit.
It's cold in December, true. But not so bad this year you have to admit. We are really lucky right now that it's the new moon. This means the moon is dark and we have nice dark skys.
Grab a lawn chair and some blankets, dress appropriately and put some hot chocolate in a thermos. Try and go out and away from as many lights as possible. This isn't easy for most, but we are luckier than some.
You can get some good viewing anytime after 9 p.m. Unlike the Perseid showers in August where the viewing doesn't get good until after midnight, the Gemenides are stronger and come out earlier.
Even if you are not seeing dozens of stars shooting across the sky, it's still well worth it and you will likely have several good sightings. And some great chances to make a wish or two for the coming year.
