Jim Fultz, assistant professor of art at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium, “An Exploration of Loss, Touch and Memory in the Landscape,” at 4 p.m. on Jan. 11 in Stutzman Lecture Hall.

During the presentation, Fultz will discuss his proposal for a public sculpture that was developed with funding from a 2018 Bluffton University Research Center (BURC) summer grant. He will explain the idea, inspiration and process behind the proposed project which consists of two sculptures in the form of tree knots. The sculptures are proposed for Bluffton’s campus and will serve as a reflection on mortality.

“What interests me is the notion of loss as a form of public intimacy or shared experience,” explained Fultz, who has taught at Bluffton since 2008. “The tree knot is a site for loss as a contemporary memento mori.” 

Fultz teaches Sculpture, 2D and 3D Foundations and Art History. He is an abstract realist and conceptual painter.
