Peanut Brittle season has begun
Peanut brittle making and sales have begun for the 2024 holiday season at the Bluffton Senior Center, 132 N. Main St. The center sells the candy in one-pound bags for $10. It will be available until the last bag is sold.
The Senior Center has been making peanut brittle as a fundraiser for 50 years. This has been one of the biggest, most consistent fundraisers for the nonprofit organization.
Organizers share, “The Center is using the same receipt that Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stagger shared back in 1974. Back in those days the Senior Center was located on South Main Street and had a much smaller kitchen.
Ralph Rammel used to say, “If you moved back you would bump butts with the other workers.” But just because the space was smaller, don’t think they made any less candy. Records show that they made just about the same in those days as they do in 2024.
For quite a few years, the Senior Citizens Center made 1000 pounds of brittle a year. Unfortunately, tastes have changed, so the Center has cut back to 650 pounds a year. It takes 30 volunteers, working one morning a week for five weeks to make that much brittle.
