By Paula Pyzik Scott
In the wee hours of the morning on August 5, Bluffton native Trevor Bassitt competed in his first Olympic games and the first Olympic games for any Bluffton athlete. He placed fifth in Heat 2 of the men’s 400m hurdles at the Stade de France.
Bassitt’s result was 49.38 seconds. He ran next to Tokyo Gold medalist Karsten Warholm who came in first in the heat with a time of 47.57. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Warholm set World and Olympic records for the event at 45.94 seconds.
Bassitt will run again at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, in the Repechage Round, a new Olympic feature that was announced in 2022.
The men’s 400m hurdles are currently dominated by the three Tokyo Olympic medalists, who are the fastest ever to run this event: Norwegian Karsten Warholm, U.S. teammate Rai Benjamin and Brazilian Alison Dos Santos.
ABOUT REPECHAGE
This is a “mulligan” round for athletes who would not otherwise advance except those that did not start, did not finish or were disqualified. The first three runners in each heat and next 3 fastest advance to the Semi-Finals, all others advance to the Repechage Round.
