Elaine Sommers Rich memorial service at a later date

Former Bluffton resident was a writer and book author

Former Bluffton resident Elaine Sommers Rich, 94, died on Sept. 27, 2020, in North Manchester, Indiana. She was born Feb. 8, 1926, to Monroe and Effie (Horner) Sommers in Plevna, Indiana. The children’s novel Hannah Elizabeth is semi-autobiographical about her childhood. 

She graduated from Goshen College in 1947 and received a master’s degree from Michigan State University. She married Ronald Rich on June 14, 1953. Ronald died in 2014.

Work on I-75 ramps at Beaverdam continue

ODOT work on I-75 in Beaverdam will affect traffic flow this month.

• The I-75 northbound exit ramp to State Route 696 is expected to open Friday, Oct 2.
• The I-75 northbound entrance ramp from State Route 696 will soon close for approximately 14 days.

Tennis team stops Lima Senior; improves to 6-12 overall

Second win in a row for Bluffton

BLUFFTON - The homestanding Bluffton girls tennis team defeated Lima Senior convincingly 4-1 Thursday evening.

With their second win in a row, the Lady Pirates improved to 6-12.

Senior Olivia Barnes won at first singles 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Pearl Lewandowski also won handily at second singles by a 6-1, 6-1 count.

Juniors Ellie Nickel and Libby Frazier combined to win at first doubles 6-3, 6-2.

The freshmen tandem of Brooke Camper and Caitlyn Couch swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at second doubles.

Volleyball Pirates win in 3 sets

BHS moves to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in NWC after beating Spencerville

BLUFFTON - The host Bluffton girls soccer team swept struggling Spencerville in a Northwest Conference volleyball match Thursday night.

Bluffton upped its record to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the NWC with the 25-20, 25-9, 25-14 victory.         

Spencerville fell to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in NWC play with the defeat.
 
Kylie Stackhouse slammed 22 kills, served three aces and came up with two blocks to lead the Pirate girls. Taylor Schwab contributed five digs and four aces to the winning effort.

BLUFFTON - The host Bluffton boys soccer team overcame an early deficit to defeat rival Riverdale 4-2 Thursday night at Steinmetz Field.

Bluffton improved to 11-0-1 with the hard-fought victory. Riverdale dropped to 8-2-1 with the tough defeat.

Falcon Jackson Clark scored first in just the second minute of play to put Riverdale ahead 1-0. 

But Bluffton came right back to tie it 1-1 on a goal by Kaden Basil in the fifth minute.

Girls' soccer team on 8-game winning streak

UPPER SANDUSKY - The visiting Bluffton girls soccer team whipped Upper Sandusky 4-1 Thursday evening in a non-league game.

Red-hot Bluffton improved to 9-2-1 overall with their eighth consecutive win. US fell to 2-9-1 with the defeat.

Reagan Mittendorf, Sami Scoles, Laykin Garmatter and Lauren Rhodes each scored one goal for the victors.

Mittendorf, Makayla Schweingruber and Rebekah Hoff each passed out one assist.
