Activate Allen County kick-off workshop comes to town; what are your dreams for a "healthy" Bluffton?

Bluffton hosted a kick-off workshop of Allen and Hancock County officials charged with improving the health of local residents. The two-hour session on Oct. 9 focused largely on increasing accessibility for bikers and pedestrians in Bluffton.

Blocked extra point leads Pirates to fourth win of season over Spencerville

The biggest play of the BHS-Spencerville game came with 23 seconds left in the game on special teams as Noah Stratton blocked an extra point to seal the game at 14-13 for the Pirates.

The first score of the game didn’t come until the second quarter as Mitchell Ault hit Robbie Stratton for 14 yards and a score.

Spencerville’s defense would get the scoring for them as Aaron Crider recovered a fumble in the Pirate’s end zone in the third quarter to tie the game.

Austin Housh: headed to Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science

We found Austin Housh one evening at Southgate Lanes and started talking. The next thing you know, we were taking notes. Here's what we came up with.

Austin, when did you graduate from Bluffton High School?
2012.

What are you doing this year?
I'm attending OSU-Lima now. Next semester I'll attend Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. It's a 15 month course. Then there's a one-year apprenticeship. I'll be finished in 2016.

U.S. Poet Laureate speaks here Tuesday; her mother attended Bluffton in 1962-63

Natasha Trethewey, the Poet Laureate of the United States, will deliver Bluffton University’s annual Keeney Peace Lecture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Founders Hall.

Trethewey will read from her work—including the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2006 collection “Native Guard”—during her presentation, titled “On Poetry and History.” The event is free and open to the public.

Some great fishing stories: Over 135 adults and youth in Maple Crest fishing derby

Over 135 adults and youth participated in a fishing derby at Maple Crest Senior Living Community, Bluffton, during Bluffton’s Fall Festival in late September.

Prizes for the derby went to:
• First guest out fishing – Karson Hauenstein
• First person to catch a fish – Connor McKean
• Persons wearing a “cool” hat – Linda Strahm (sequined black cap) and Gene Grieser (hat from Alice Springs, Central Australia)

Joining them in the Homecoming court were (left to right) juniors Katie Conrad and Jason Trespel; seniors Christian Vail, Mackenzie Richards, Ben Roeschley and Abbey Graber; and sophomores Colten Kelso and Alicia Rodriguez.
