Dr. Bill Kose from Blanchard Valley Health System was present at the Bluffton Lions Club Sept. 19 meeting.
He talked about Issue 2 coming up on the ballot in November. He discussed the cost of health care and medications. Dr. Kose explained that many of the professional medical associations do not agree with this issue.

If you enjoy the sounds of steel drum bands, you'll want to hear a free performance by The Wild Steelions on Saturday at Maple Crest.
The performance is part of Saturdays' town-wide Fall Festival. The Steelions are a group of Ada school musicians. They performed last Saturday at the Ada Harvest and Herb Festival. The Icon filmed one of their performances and it is included in a video below this story.
The Bluffton High School class of 1947 celebrated their 70th anniversary on Sept. 20 at Henry's Restaurant in Ottawa.
Twelve classmates were present out of a class of 55 of which 26 are still living. One member, Wanda (Lehman) Lyman was present from Pennsylvania. The remainder live in this area.
In sports, the class is proud of the record they set in their senior year: both the football team and the basketball team were undefeated in regular season play, a record that still stands.
Interstate 75 northbound just north of state Route 103, Bluffton, will have reduced-width lanes through the work zone for replacement of curb and guard rail next week according to ODOT.
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained the majority of the time, but some intermittent lane closures will occur during daytime and nighttime hours. Work is being performed by Eagle Bridge, Sidney.
The success of last weekend’s restoration agriculture workshop translates to “more to come,” according to Jonah Agner, one of the workshop sponsors.
Held Sept. 15-17 at Agner farms in rural Bluffton, nearly 30 participants from across Ohio and Michigan heard nationally acclaimed speaker, Mark Shepard, share about hands-on restoration agriculture.
According to Agner, plans are underway for a second weekend workshop next spring.
Shepard shared his expertise with attendees’ interested learning about tools and strategies for creating restoration agriculture designs.
A reception for the traveling exhibit “The Mirror of the Martyrs” will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Grace Albrecht Gallery of Bluffton University’s Sauder Visual Arts Center.
During the reception, which takes place on Homecoming weekend, visitors will have the opportunity to meet with Bluffton art faculty.
“The Mirror of the Martyrs” exhibit runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 5. Regular gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 1-5 p.m. and Sunday, 1-6 p.m.
Jeanne Ann Hall, 82, died Sept. 20, 2017, at her residence. Jeanne was born July 5, 1935, in Columbus Grove to the late M. Paul and Clela (Hilty) Amstutz. On Oct. 25, 1955, she married Delbert Hall who survives.
Jeanne was a graduate of Columbus Grove High School. She was a homemaker and had worked as an activities director at Hilty Memorial Home in Pandora. Jeanne was a member of the Pandora United Methodist Church, the Good Sam Camping Club and the Columbus Grove VFW Auxiliary.
This past summer’s third-ever Ride to Remember bicycle ride, with 215 riders, generated approximately $4,272 for the Bluffton Pedestrian and Bike Pathway project, according to Richard Ramseyer.
With that total, the three-year event has generated almost $8,000 to the pathway project.
Richard Ramseyer of the Bluffton Lions Foundation, sponsor of the event, said that the enthusiasm from riders and the community is growing and that next year’s ride, should be even larger.
Justin Kauffman, a Bluffton sophomore biology major from Smithville, and recipient of a 2017 Summer Discovery Grant, gained vocational experience in the field of dentistry this summer by volunteering at a free community clinic.
Kauffman has been interested in dentistry since the eighth grade.
“For my grant, I job shadowed and assisted the dentists at the Viola Startzman Clinic,” said Kauffman. “I mainly focused on learning and grasping basic dentistry concepts as well as helping with tasks such as sterilizing the rooms and equipment.”
Bluffton University will celebrate Homecoming weekend Oct. 7 and 8.
A free picnic lunch will be available for alumni in an alumni tailgate tent at Emery Sears Athletic Complex from noon until 1:30 p.m., when the Homecoming game against Anderson will begin.
