The number of times your heart beats per minute

If February had you thinking about Valentine’s Day, why not take a moment to assess your own heart (health)?

Heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times your heart beats per minute. Normal (resting) heart rates vary from person to person, depending on a number of factors or conditions.

Juniors Alivia Koenig and Averey Rumer earned First Team Northwest Conference Honors In voting turned in by league coaches. Classmate Katie Prater earned Honorable Mention Honors. The second season begins Friday for Bluffton’s wrestling program.  The Pirates will compete in the OHSAA Sectional meet at LCC.  The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the District Tournament in Troy next weekend.  The top four in each weight class there will move on to the State Meet in Columbus. Eight area high schools entered 23 decorated rain barrels in this Blanchard River Watershed Partnership contest.

The rain barrels were on display at the Findlay Village Mall during the car show on Feb. 16-18. The BRWP paid $825 back to the schools in the form of prize money. The winning barrels were:

Maple Crest Senior Living Village will host a Soup Cook Off and Silent Auction on Thursday, March 8, 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the lower-level patio room of the main building.

The Bluffton Senior Citizens-Bluffton Lions Club Foundation pancake and sausage benefit is from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 17, at the Senior Center, 132 N. Main St.

Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 8374 Phillips Road, Bluffton, will hold a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 9. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for youth 10 and under.
 
 

Students in the Bluffton University education organization sponsored an evening with nine Bluffton school teachers, according to Tim Byers, advisor to the organization.

"Nearly 50 students were challenged, entertained, engaged and touched for 90 minutes as the teachers shared their stories and their paths,  taken to become teachers," he said.

He added: "The students left energized and more prepared to become effective teachers because of this evening.

University baseball team's annual Vs. Cancer fundraiser next week

The Bluffton University baseball team will once again go bald for a cause during a fundraiser for the non-profit Vs. Cancer.
 
A head-shaving event, featuring several baseball players and their supporters, will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27 in the Commons at Marbeck Center. This is the seventh year the baseball team has raised money for the charity, and it is the team’s largest community service project.
 

Zoning hearing set for Feb. 28

The Richland Township board of zoning appeals later this month will consider a conditional use permit for the construction of a retail butcher shop in an agriculture district.

The hearing takes place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Richland Township house, 8435 N. Dixie Highway, according to Joshua Barhorst, township board of zoning appeals chairman.
