Club closure party after 63 years of continuous gardening enjoyment

Past and present members of the Bluffton Garden Study Club are invited to it closure party after 63 years of continuous gardening enjoyment. 

"We will be gathering at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Patio Room at Maple Crest," said Jenny Pilarowski.

There will be “garden” cake refreshments to enjoy as well as a display of minutes, treasurer’s reports and past program booklets plus any of your own mementoes you would like to share.

Arrangements have been made to archive the records of the organization at the Bluffton Public Library.

Professional Achievement Award and Faculty/Staff Service Award

The Bluffton University Alumni Association is seeking Alumni Award nominations for the 2019-20 academic year. The two awards to be given out are the Professional Achievement Award and the Faculty/Staff Service Award.

The Professional Achievement Award recognizes a graduate who has continued the pursuit of intellectual growth and has explored creative avenues in his or her chosen field. As a result, this individual has achieved notable success and recognition in his or her career.

The Ohio Northern University HeathWise mobile clinic will be in Bluffton from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 22. The bus will be on Main Street outside of the Bluffton Public Library, 145 S. Main St. 

This clinic offers free screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipids (please fast for 12 hours prior to your arrival if you wish to participate in the lipids screening). Participants may speak with Healthwise students and staff about their results or concerns, and even receive referrals to area doctors.

It’s beginning to feel like maple syrup weather as temperatures dip below freezing at night and rise above freezing during the day.

Bluffton High School girls' basketball team doubled the score on Pandora-Gilboa, winning the opening round of the sectional tournament at Allen East.

BHS won 51-23. Bluffton advances to face Leipsic at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Allen East.

Averey Rumer scored 28 points for Bluffton. She becomes the third BHS girl basketball player to hit the 1,000-point level in the last three seasons.

 

Alivia Koenig, BHS senior, named NWC player of the year

This is the winter of the Pirate. Over the weekend Bluffton's wrestling coach, Jeff Kleman, was voted NWC wrestling coach of the year and Deandre Nassar was named NWC wrestler of the year. Click here for the wrestling story.

Bluffton senior guard Alivia Koenig was selected as the 2018-19 NWC Player of the Year in voting by Northwest Conference girls' basketball coaches. 

Michael Romey will remain as bank board chair and CEO

Eric Faulkner was named president of Citizens National Bank by its board of directors in an annoucement made Feb. 19. He is only the fifth person to serve as bank president since the bank opened nearly 100 years ago.

Michael Romey, former president, will remain chairman of the board and CEO of the bank. He has held the role of president/CEO since 1986.

Faulkner began his banking career at CNB in 2009 in Columbus, heading up the loan participation program.

Make-up day is Thursday, May 30

Bluffton schools have cancelled classes for Wednesday, Feb. 20, according to Greg Denecker, superintendent.

The school went on a 2-hour delay at 5:29 a.m. and cancelled classes at 7:50 a.m., according to Ohio Alerts.

The make-up day is Thursday, May 30.

SHANNON Service Club and Senior Citizens Center launch the season

Garage sale season arrives in Bluffton this weekend.

The community hosts two giant garage sales with the SHANNON Service Club’s two-day sale and Bluffton Senior Center’s three-day sale. Here are the details:

SHANNON Service Club sale
The sale is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 23, at The Centre, 601 N. Main St., Bluffton. This is the 16th annual club sale. The sale includes dozens of tables from vendors who will offer a large assortment of items.

13th year for Bluffton beautification project

Orders are now being placed for this summer’s downtown flowerpots.

According to Susie and Steve Stratton of Stratton Greenhouses, “This is our 13th year for providing the potted plants on Main Street.”
