BLUFFTON - The streaking Bluffton High School boys tennis team swept visiting Western Buckeye League foe Defiance 5-0 on Monday, May 12.

The Pirates improved to 14-3 with the victory. Bluffton won all 10 sets, including all three singles matches without dropping a single game.

Struggling Defiance fell to 1-7 with the loss.

Pirate senior Branson Hilty triumphed at first singles 6-0, 6-0.  

Bluffton senior Jack Brauen also won with a double bagel at second singles 6-0, 6-0.

The May monthly meeting of the Bluffton Ohio Historical Society take place Wednesday evening, May 14 at 7:00 at the Bluffton Sportsman's Club, 405 N. Spring St., Bluffton, in Buckeye Park. 

The meeting agenda will include committee reports, including an update from the Building Committee and preparation for Fred Steiner's May 21 presentation.  Also, 2026 rental rates need to be discussed as well as a potential name for the Depot location.

It is with genuine sorrow that I received the news that the Baltimore Province of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R or Redemptorists), after its recent discernment and pastoral planning process, has announced their decision to withdraw from the Diocese of Toledo’s parishes of Saint Gerard, Lima and Saint Mary, Bluffton, effective June 30, 2026.

It isn't often that I get to interview a sports legend. Beaverdam High School's last graduating class was in 1964. The next year Beaverdam consolidated with Bluffton Schools. Since then Beaverdam has provided good athletes in different sports that have helped Bluffton teams win championships. 

The Bluffton Public Library's 2025 Summer Read begins early registration starting May 12 at the front desk of the library. The Summer Read theme is "Color our World."

Those who sign up early for Summer Read can play "Guess how many LEGOs?" for a chance to win 4 tickets to the Butterfly House. Winners will be drawn on June 7.

The Pirate girls softball team will take on Ottawa-Glandorf in the OHSAA D5 Sectional Game on Wednesday, May 14 at 5 p.m. at the Athletic Complex on OG Road.

The price is $5 for students (K-12) and $8 for adults.

Cash tickets will also be available for purchase at the gate.

MAY 12 MEDIA RELEASE__The Bluffton University Board of Trustees met in May for their annual spring meeting. The board discussed a variety of topics including federal and state changes in higher ed, reflections from the halted merger process, enrollment review and other institutional needs. Trustees also took several actions including promoting faculty and approving a one-year strategic plan.

Jane M. Shaw, 69, passed away May 10, 2025, at The Ohio State Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital. 

Jane was born November 9, 1955 in Bluffton to Dwight and Clarabeth (Diller) Bixel who preceded her in death. On August 9, 1975 she married Steve Shaw who survives.

The Bluffton High School boys baseball team was seeded fifth at the Div. V Northwest District 2 Bluffton University sectional drawing Sunday, May 11.

Nine teams are in the rugged sectional, with Midwest Athletic Conference leader Coldwater (19-1) seeded first.

The Pirates (10-11) will visit fourth seed Liberty-Benton (15-3) Saturday, May 24 at noon. The Eagles are first in the Blanchard Valley Conference.
