It's always a joyful moment when a new baby is born. Everyone in the family wants to come meet the new addition. A few days later, this precious little baby is struggling to breathe and needs to be in the intensive care unit (ICU) with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis.

RSV is a virus generally present in the winter, usually at its worst in January and February each year. We are starting to see cases of RSV in our community.

Cornelius “Neil” C. Kehler, 93, of Bluffton passed away October 2, 2025 at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton.

Mark LeRoy Weidner, age 82, lived an extraordinary life because he was an extraordinary man.  He lived through many beautiful chapters and passed away peacefully beside his family on September 27, 2025 in Lititz, PA. He had a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born the second of four children in Allentown to LeRoy and Viola Weidner. He met his future wife Susan in the church nursery at First Mennonite of Allentown.

Betty Jean Hamilton, 89, passed away October 1, 2025 at Willow Ridge - Frieda House in Bluffton. Betty was born June 20, 1936 in Bluffton to the late Walter and Beulah (Slusser) Hamilton. 

Betty was a 1954 graduate of Cory-Rawson High School. She then received her bachelor's degree in education from Bluffton College and later her master's degree from Bowling Green State University.

ST. MARYS__The visiting Bluffton High School girls soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with non-league foe St. Marys on Thursday, September 30.

The Pirate girls are 7-7-1 overall after their first tie of the season.  

Meanwhile, St. Marys is now 5-6-4 after the knot.

Bluffton put two of its six shots on goal. St. Mary’s fired 20 shots, nine of which were on target.

Bluffton senior keeper Kynzie Ewing saved all nine SM shots. Roughrider goalie Bella Hertenstein made two stops.

Nieman qualifies for district tourney

LIMA – Seven members of the Bluffton High School girls tennis team competed hard on the first day of the Div. II sectionals at UNOH in Lima Thursday.

Only one was left standing at the end of the day with Bluffton posting a 5-4 record. The Pirates were 3-2 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles action.

“What a day of tennis,” said Bluffton head coach Trisha Nieman. “With nine courts buzzing and 11 teams competing, our Bluffton girls came ready to battle.”

Bluffton finishes 2nd to Crestview in NWC

SPENCERVILLE – The visiting Bluffton High School volleyball team survived a marathon first set and went on to beat Spencerville in a tough four-set Northwest Conference match on Thursday, September 2.

The Pirate girls improved to 14-7 overall and finished 6-1 in NWC play with the hard-fought road victory.  

With the surprisingly difficult 36-34, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13 win at Spencerville, the Pirates clinched sole possession of second place in the league.
