Postcard art to open Bluffton gallery season
Bluffton University's Sauder Visual Arts Center will host "4by6 and 6by4," an exhibition of postcard-sized art, to lead off the 2012-13 schedule in the Grace Albrecht Gallery.
Opening Aug. 25, the exhibit is free and open to the public through Sept. 23. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A reception will be held with participating artists from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16.
The postcard art, examples of which have already come from Great Britain, California and Chicago, as well as from local artists, will include original drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, prints and mixed media. Every work will go on sale for $20, with all proceeds going to Special Kids Therapy, a Findlay, Ohio, nonprofit that provides services to children with physical, mental and emotional challenges.
Organizing the show is Jim Fultz, an adjunct art instructor entering his fifth year at Bluffton. The idea came, he says, "from an interest or an impulse to put something together that would be unpredictable." Seeking entries on "Call for Entries" websites nationwide and an international artist site was "a type of experiment for me in generating an event simply by using technology," he adds.
Fultz says he chose Special Kids Therapy as the beneficiary of the art sale because of its service to his son, who has autism. "I just think that what they are doing is a great thing, and I would like to give back in some small way," he explains.
