Janice Young celebrated her 8th birthday the same year as her son
Here's another in our series of Feb. 29 leap year birthday celebrants.
The "elder" leap year baby we’ve met this year with a Bluffton connection is Janice Young – who needs a brief introduction.
She and her husband, Rob, are dual residents of Bluffton and Columbus. You’ll see this couple in town most weekends. When they call Bluffton home, it’s at the corner of Grove and Kibler.
Janice didn’t grow up here, but Rob is a BHS grad, who coincidentally grew up at 226 Grove St., the home of Fred and Mary Steiner, Icon owners.
We found out about Janice's Feb. 29 birthday on Facebook, then contacted her for some birthday details.
Here’s her story:
I was born in 1960. This makes me 14 birthdays old in 2016. The best thing about being born on in a leap year is that when I’m 100, I’ll actually be 25.
On "off" years I enjoy celebrating on the 28th of February and the March 1.
I really don't have any special traditions. I have been fortunate to always celebrate with family and friends.
Four years ago I met my son for breakfast. He sent me off to work with flowers and a balloon.
My husband sent flowers to work. I celebrated with co-workers and spent a lot of the day explaining how the date works and "how old I was."
It was fun watching people do the math in their heads. That evening we went out for a special dinner.
Here’s a funny story that only I can claim: The year of my eighth birthday was the same year my son turned eight!”
She closed with this interesting comment: “It probably sounds silly, but I am so amazed and excited that there are three leap year birthdays being celebrated at Bluffton schools. I have gone all my life and only known one other person who celebrates a birthday on the same day. How fun! Thanks for including me.”
The Icon says, “Go for 100, Janice, we hope to be around to interview you then.”
