Saturday 2 p.m. performance at Swiss homestead
At 2 p.m., Saturday, Wendy Chappell-Dick will present a musical program of favorite hymns, at the Swiss Community Historical Society's Schumacher's homestead, 8350 Bixel Road, Bluffton.
Hymns are from the Radical Reformation through the local Swiss settlers' immigration and assimilation process, tracing musical influences on Mennonite music from various folk traditions.
The hymn arrangements are done for dulcimer, guitar and vocals, and combine secular songs with religious works of similar influence.
The Swiss Community Historical Society Homestead is open to the public every Saturday in June, July and August from 1 to 5 p.m. Docents are available each Saturday to interpret the homestead's history.
Admission is $5 per person. Admission for Swiss Community Historical Society members is free. Admission is also free to all children 16 and under, accompanied by an adult.
Areas open to visitors each Saturday afternoon include:
• 1843 House (restored)
• Summer kitchen (reconstructed on the original foundation)
• Workshop (restored)
• 1850s kitchen garden
• Outdoor bake oven and extensive grounds
