It's Bluffton's favorite holiday candy - senior center peanut brittle
If prevailing wages were required no one could afford Bluffton Senior Citizens Center peanut brittle. Especially, with all the seniority levels involved in production. The junior member of this year’s crew was 70 years old, we think.
Fortunately the crew consists of volunteers. That means one pound of the locally-made candy is affordable at $5 a pound. And, it’s available each November.
It takes a crew of 30 or so volunteers for a full morning of work to create 184, or so, pounds of Bluffton’s favorite holiday candy, according to Tony Meyers, director of the center.
Volunteers work during the first four Mondays mornings of November – this being week 2 – in the peanut brittle production.
New to this year’s product line is black walnut brittle. This top-of-the-line item will be available later this month, at an estimated price of $7 for one-half pound.
Based on the popularity and quality of the product, we estimate that customers might well place orders for the black walnut brittle, but that’s simply our opinion.
In the meantime, peanut brittle is available at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center, 132 N. Main St., Bluffton, while the supply lasts.
