The Bluffton Police Department recently met the requirement to receive Provisional Certification through the Ohio Collaborative Law Enforcement Certification program, according to Ryan Burkholder, Bluffton police chief.
This achievement means that the Bluffton police department has adopted and implemented state standards established by the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen community and police relations.
The fall Bluffton elementary book fair takes place later this month, as does Red Ribbon Week. Those two special events are among several activities in October at the elementary.

ELEMENTARY BOOK FAIR: The Book Fair will begin the week of Oct. 23. Daily hours are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday. Family Night is Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Bluffton residents and businesses opened their pocketbooks quickly as $17,000 in pledges and donations was reached earlier this month to fund a K-9 unit for the Bluffton Police Department, according to Ryan Burkholder, police chief.
Burkholder informed Bluffton council on Monday that the goal was reached. He added that donations and pledges are still accepted and continue to come in as a contingency fund is being created for the unit.
“The support is overwhelming,” Burkholder told The Icon.
Bluffton Fire Department acquired a new piece of equipment and it arrived as a gift.
SRK-Ohio, formerly DTR Industries, donated its industrial fire truck to the village earlier this month.
In making the donation at Monday's council meeting, Don Camper, vice president of human resources of SRK-Ohio, said that the village and SRK-Ohio have had a long and important relationship.
"The village has been a staunch supporter of SRK-Ohio's business and a great neighbor," he said.
Apollo Career Center is hosting an Ice Cream and Explore Day for students and their grandparents Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Students will act as their grandparents' tour guides for program visits and campus exploration. The visit will culminate with one-on-one time over ice cream in the Apollo Commons. To date, over 350 grandparents have signed up for the event.
