Here's a great incentive for prom-goers to shop local

Prom season is approaching.

Six Bluffton businesses have partnered to encourage area youth to shop local for all of their prom needs by using an Ultimate Prom Pass.

The idea of the “prom pass” originated from a conversation between two friends, Rachel Davis, owner of Studio Silhouette, and Joanna Gratz, a Compassionate Entrepreneur with Trades of Hope.

“We originally were talking about how the two of us could partner so high school girls could get their prom dress and jewelry in one stop,” said Gratz.

The Village of Bluffton is now accepting applications for lifeguards and management  for the 2017 pool season, according to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

Applications are available in the Bluffton town hall lobby, 154 N. Main St.

Persons with questions may call 419-358-2066. Applications are due by Friday, April 28.

Twelve First Mennonite Church youth participated in the Mennonite Youth Choir Festival March 11-12 at Goshen (IN) College, under the direction of Hal Hess, a retired music educator and administrator.

Open to all students in grades 3 through 9 from any faith community, the festival culminates in a Sunday afternoon concert. The children prepare for the festival by listening to music and learning the sheet music sent to them. The Bluffton youth also prepared by rehearsing the music together during sessions with Laura Hartzler, director of FMC’s children’s choirs.

Despite long-term decreasing revenue from the State of Ohio

The Village of Bluffton’s finances appear to be in good shape, based on its Dec. 31, 2016, cash basis net position, says Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

At the end of 2016, the village’s total assets were $4,952,478 in the following funds:
• Governmental activities
(general fund and other funds) $3,846,652
• Business-type activities
(things the village charges for: water, sewer, refuse) $1,105,826

These figures were part of the Feb. 27 council packet. The 2016 year-end figures are unaudited.

The Icon spotted this plate in the Bluffton University student parking lot on Bentley Road. It's on a blue Toyota Corolla with lots of interesting bumper stickers. "Read Banned Books," as an example.
