BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Bluffton University women’s basketball team hosted Manchester University on Wednesday, Feb. 1 and took control from the tip as they defeated the Spartans by a convincing 55-34 margin. The win pushed the Beavers to 16-4 overall and 10-3 in the HCAC while Manchester dipped to 7-13 on the season and 6-7 in the Heartland Conference.

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -  The Bluffton hit the road for a visit with the Manchester University Spartans on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Bluffton fell by a 74-66 score in overtime, slipping to 4-9 in the HCAC (11-9 overall), while the Spartans improved to 5-8 in the Heartland (7-13 overall).

The Weatherman didn’t have to tell Icon viewers that January was warmer than typical Januarys.

The “lowest” daily high readings in January took place from Jan. 5 to 8. Otherwise, daily highs peaked in the 50s and 60s on six days.

However, when it was cold, it was cold. Jan. 5 to 8 “highest” low was 5 degrees.

Snow was minimal in January with traces on eight days and a total snowfall of only 2 inches.

Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, provided a breakdown of daily weather in January. It is in the attachment.

 

Bluffton High School boys' basketball team more than doubled the score on Waynesfield-Goshen on Monday, winning 78 to 37.

Luke Denecker, Bluffton, led all scorers with 25 points.

Virginia G. Augsburger, 93, died Jan. 31, 2017, at Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton. Virginia was born July 6, 1923, in Bluffton to the late Clarence and Ethel J. (Michael) Roberts. On Feb. 3, 1946, she married Richard Augsburger who preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 2011.

Mary Kathryn Niswander, 98, died Jan. 30, 2017, at Willow Ridge - Frieda House in Bluffton.  Mary was born June 15, 1918, in Pandora to the late Tony and Zella (Steele) Frantz.  On Dec. 24, 1938, she married Stanley Niswander and he preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 2003.

Mary graduated from Pandora High School. She retired from Sears-Roebuck in Lima where she had been a division manager. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bluffton and past member of Grace United Methodist Church in Lima.
