Letters: Vote "yes" for Ohio Issue 1 on May 8
Icon viewers:
Under what circumstances does an important bill pass the Ohio Senate with a unanimous vote?
What kind of ballot issue is endorsed by both the Ohio Democratic Party and the Ohio Republican Party?
It only happens when the issue is obviously good for the state. That issue is Issue 1, and all voters should vote yes for Issue 1 on May 8.
Issue 1 eliminates hyper-partisan gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to favor one party over the other. Issue 1 creates a bipartisan process of redistricting and encourages greater citizen participation, through public hearings on any proposed map.
Under the new rules, districts must be compact, and mapmakers must avoid dividing communities into different districts. Issue 1 will make Congressional elections in Ohio competitive again, encouraging voter participation.
If you don’t trust the endorsement of politicians, trust these other organizations that have endorsed Issue 1:
• The Ohio Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO;
• the Ohio Council of Churches and the Ohio Education Association;
• the Ohio Farm Bureau and the Ohio Environmental Council;
• the NAACP, and the League of Women Voters, which was Issue 1’s initial sponsor.
Issue 1 has also been endorsed by newspapers across the state, including the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Columbus Dispatch, the Findlay Courier, and the Lima News, which editorialized (April 7, 2018), “State Issue 1 is good for Republicans. It’s also good for Democrats. But most of all, it’s good for Ohio.”
Come out to the polls on May 8. Even if you don't want to take a party ballot, take an Issues Only ballot, and Vote yes on Issue 1!
