Pirate girls tennis win vs. Van Wert
By Cort Reynolds
VAN WERT__The visiting Bluffton High School girls tennis team defeated Western Buckeye League foe Van Wert decisively 4-1 on Tuesday, September 16.
The Pirate team improved to 5-8 after the impressive victory. Van Wert dropped to 1-9 with the defeat.
“Van Wert was a great opponent who played with honesty, competitiveness, and sportsmanship,” said Bluffton head coach Trisha Nieman. “Matches were well-fought across all courts, and it was an enjoyable night of tennis.
“Our team came away with a strong 4–1 victory.”
Pirate Hannah Nieman beat Cougar sophomore Lauren Gearhart 6-2, 6-1 at first singles.
“Hannah faced sophomore Lauren Gearhart, who is already a strong competitor and has tremendous potential for the years ahead,” said Nieman.
“Lauren even had to switch rackets after breaking a string but stayed composed. Hannah played steady, smart tennis and came away with the 6-1, 6-2 win. It was a fun match to watch and a solid performance by both players,” she added.
At second singles, Pirate Ari Bowling rallied to defeat Bristol Wollet 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
“Ari pulled off the comeback of the night,” Nieman enthused. “After losing the first set 1-6, she completely flipped the momentum, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-2. Every point was earned; neither player gave anything away.
“Ari's serve really came together tonight, and her ability to keep moving and stay engaged made the difference,” the coach continued. “Breaking through Bristol's slice serve wasn't easy, but Ari's persistence and adjustments paid off in a big way.”
At first doubles, the Bluffton tandem of Willow Angel and Kate Klinger beat the VW duo of Kimmel/Eberle by a 7-5, 6-2 count.
“Kate and Willow showed the power of mental toughness,” said Nieman. “Down 2-5 in the first set, they dug in, stayed positive, and battled back to win it 7-5. From there, they carried the momentum to take the second set 6-2.
“As coaches, we've been emphasizing the importance of not letting one bad point affect the next three, and they put that lesson into action beautifully,” Nieman offered. “Their doubles formations and teamwork were clicking, and it was exciting to see it all come together.”
Pirates Peighton Bowers and Leah Hoffman combined to defeat Cougars Spieles and Castillo 6-2, 6-1 at number two doubles.
“Peighton and Leah continue to be a dream team to watch,” said the coach. “They came out strong and won the first set; something that, if memory serves, is the first time they've done that this season.
“From there, they carried their energy and confidence through to secure the match. Their growth, teamwork, and ability to learn from each match are such a joy to see,” she noted.
Madilynn Thompson posted the lone VW win at second singles with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Claire Blackburn.
“Claire showed perseverance and grit on the court,” Nieman noted. “She kept fighting, stayed positive, and never gave up, representing the heart of this team.
“Overall, this was a great night for our team not just because of the 4–1 win, but because of the way our players competed, adjusted, and supported each other,” she summed up. “We're proud of the growth, effort, and sportsmanship on display tonight.”
Bluffton’s next match is on the road this upcoming Saturday morning at Archbold.
The Pirate tennis home match scheduled vs. Maumee Valley Country Day on Thursday, Sept. 18 was cancelled and will not be made up.
Sectionals are at UNOH October 2/4. Schools can elect to send three singles players and two doubles teams to sectionals, or one singles player and three doubles teams.
The sectional meeting is this Sunday at Wapakoneta. The top four singles players and top four doubles tandems at UNOH will advance to district.
