The Pandora United Methodist Church will be hosting a free community meal on Wednesday, May 30, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, 108 E. Washington Street, Pandora. 

The meal this month is provided  by Sprunger Insurance. The menu is spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverage.

Theodore "Ted" Marvin Diller, 88, died May 8, 2018, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay. Ted was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Allen County, Ohio to the late Archie and Velma (Miller) Diller. On February 19, 1954, he married Joan VanMeter Diller who survives in Bluffton.

Ted was a graduate of Pandora High School, attended Bluffton College and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  Ted was a member of Grace Mennonite Church in Pandora and past member of the Rufus Putnam Masonic Lodge in Columbus Grove.  

The Bluffton Junior High String Orchestra and Bluffton 6th String Orchestra performed at the Ohio Music Educators Association Junior High large group adjudicated event held at Parkway HS on May 4.

The 6th grade orchestra received a "superior" and the junior high orchestra received an "excellent."

The junior high orchestra performed "The Star of County Down," "Minuet from the Royal Fireworks Music" and "The Enchanted Forest" and received an "excellent" rating.

Earns top marks in oratorical contest

Irena Xhari ’18, a business administration major from Lezha, Albania, was named the winner of Bluffton University’s annual C. Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Contest held April 11.

The spring sports season finally heated up and just in time for tournament action to start!  Here's where the Pirates will be lining up in the OHSAA fields over the next few weeks :

Softball: Hosts Spencerville Tuesday May 8, at 5 p.m.

The Bearcats defeated the Pirates 9-2 earlier this season BHS will be looking for revenge.  Bluffton is on a hot streak, winning nine straight games coming into the contest. 

She plans to attend Ohio University and major in Anthropology

Ali Moser is the April Bluffton High School student of the month.

Ali is in the National Honor Society, Buccaneer, Renaissance, Latin Club, Ocean Focus,  and volunteers in the Pirate 2 Pirate mentoring program.

She played volleyball throughout high school and was named "defensive player of the year" this year and was a NWC Gold award winner.

Other special awards she has received include "English student of the year."

She plans on attending Ohio University in the fall and will major in Anthropology.

Ann (Stechschulte) Alyanak third overall woman at Illinois Marathon

Former Bluffton High School track standout Ann (Stechschulte) Alyanak completed The Illinois Marathon as the third overall woman with a time of 2:43:00, and qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Trials. The April 28 marathon was held in Champagne, Ill.

This is the third time Alyanak has qualified for the Marathon Olympic Trials. She finished 7th overall at the Olympic Trials her first time around back in 2008.

A free Mother's Day tea party is planned from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 13, at ByStill Waters Bistro (formerly Jeanne's Kitchen).

All women ages 13 and older are invited to join for an afternoon of tea, finger
sandwiches and sweets.

The idea for the event is based on the premise that no woman should be alone on Mother's Day. Come alone or grab a friend. Reservations must be made by Wednesday, May.

Bluffton University will hold four summer volleyball skill camps, according to  Steve Yarnell, coach.

Camp schedule follows:
• Wednesday, June 27
6-8th grade, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

• Thursday, June 28
K-5th grade, 10 a.m.-noon

• Friday, June 29
7-12th grade, setting camp, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

• Wednesday-Thursday, July 11-12
High school camp, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Race/walk entry form and route map attached

Friends of the Bluffton Public Library will hold its 5th annual 5K Run/Walk for Literacy on Saturday, June 16.

Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Co., and the Friends of the Library host the event. The run/walk begins at 9 a.m. in front of Bluffton High School on College Avenue.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Bluffton Public Library lower level. Registration fees are $20 (10 years and under, free). T-shirts are included in the registration cost until May 31.
