Letter: If you have some time, visit a senior today

As managers for a senior citizen apartment building here in Bluffton, my wife and I are often approached by various organizations interested in helping out, or wondering what donations could be made to support our residents.
Of course we are always grateful for the interaction (as are our residents), and we normally direct these groups to some recurring effort such as Bingo, or food donations.
However, I can say convincingly that a major part of our senior's lives is often neglected and that is their mind. Many seniors suffer from lonliness and depression. Many of their friends and even some of their families have passed away, and these survivors find themselves dwelling alone.
That's why we work so hard to keep them active and involved. Sitting in an apartment day after day can become monotonous, and begin to wear down one's health both mentally and physically. It is so important to remember these people and realize that they have a lifetime of experiences to share.
Sitting and talking with our seniors is so important to their happiness and thus their well-being. I have personally seen sickly and weak residents recover their vitality through the most basic interactions, and I know for a fact that giving hope to someone through basic kindness and consideration is vital to their longevity.
I hope we can realize that food, as important as it is, can never replace a friendly face when strengthening our seniors and encouraging them to hold on for one more day. Health comes in many forms and from many avenues, and our resident's mental health is vital to their physical health. If you have some time, visit a senior today.
Just talk, listen, or be a friend. It will be worth it when you see their smile, hear their stories, and know you are helping someone feel wanted again.
Best Regards,
